Portable unit or fixed split system?
Portable air conditioners work straight away with no installation and can be moved from room to room as needed — ideal for rented flats or as a quick solution. They do need an exhaust hose out of a window, though, which draws some heat back in and slightly reduces efficiency. Split systems with a fixed outdoor unit run considerably more quietly and efficiently in continuous use, but need professional installation by a refrigeration technician, making them better suited to homeowners or a long-term solution.
What should you look for when buying?
Cooling capacity in kW should match your room size — as a rough guide, allow around 0.06 to 0.08 kW per square metre at a normal ceiling height. The energy efficiency rating (the SEER value on split systems) shows real-world consumption over a whole season. Useful extras include dehumidifying for muggy days, a fan-only mode for simple air circulation, and on some models a heating function for spring and autumn.
Which air conditioning brands are popular?
Daikin and Panasonic are the benchmark for split systems, known for particularly high energy efficiency and quiet running. LG offers a wide range from portable to split units, De'Longhi specialises in portable air conditioners for the home, and Comfee and Klarstein offer good value for those starting out.
