With this split unit, the noisy part moves outside — only the indoor unit with the fan stays in the room. That's the key difference from a portable monoblock unit: with no compressor in the room it stays quiet, and with no exhaust hose there's no need to leave a window ajar — which would otherwise let in exactly the warm air you just pushed out.
