Bean-to-cup, portafilter or capsule machine?
Bean-to-cup machines grind, brew, tamp and, if you like, froth milk fully automatically — ideal when you want a good result at the touch of a button first thing in the morning. If you would rather set the grind size, brew pressure and extraction time yourself, a classic portafilter machine gives you far more control over crema and aroma, at the cost of a learning curve. Capsule machines sit in between: compact, quick to clean and grinder-free, but with ongoing capsule costs and a narrower range of flavours.
What should you look for when buying?
A conical burr grinder grinds more evenly and more quietly than a blade grinder, and preserves the coffee's aroma far better. Check the automatic cleaning cycle too: a bean-to-cup machine with self-descaling and milk-system rinsing saves a lot of manual upkeep. Also worth checking are the number of preset coffee specialities, the size of the bean hopper if you drink a lot of coffee, and — on portafilter machines — a stable brew pressure of around 9 bar, which most manufacturers now reach as standard.
