Front loader or top loader?
Front loaders offer the larger drum volume, typically between 7 and 12 kg, and can be stacked with a tumble dryer on top — ideal when floor space is tight. Top loaders need less width, since the door sits on top, and are easier on your back thanks to the higher loading position. Their drawback is that they cannot be stacked and rarely offer the largest capacities. If you regularly wash large loads, a front loader is usually the better fit.
What should you look for when buying?
Spin speed determines how much moisture is left in the laundry: from 1,400 rpm upwards, significantly less water remains, which shortens drying time. The energy efficiency class (A to G since 2021) tells you more about consumption than the older plus-classes did. Also check the special programmes that matter to you — mixed fabrics, sportswear, wool or a fast 15-minute cycle — as well as the noise level during spinning, especially if the machine will sit close to living spaces.
Which washing machine brands are popular?
Miele is the benchmark for longevity, often advertised with a service life of over 20 years. Bosch and Siemens, both part of the same group, offer an especially wide range spanning entry-level to premium. Samsung and LG stand out for smart app control and belt-free direct drive, while AEG is known for particularly water- and energy-saving programmes.
